The Power of Creation

I try to remind myself how lucky I am that I get to go to work every day/night and create. Creation is such a powerful thing to comprehend. Something didn’t exist. You willed it into existence. And now it exists. I don’t know how you parents can walk around all day without just rubbing your power in everyone’s faces.

I got to thinking about how the current world is pretty saturated with destruction, chaos, and turmoil. That makes the choice to create rather than destroy even more crucial for a brighter future for all of us. It is through creation that we tap into our unique abilities, fostering growth, harmony, and progress.

Nurturing Positivity and Growth

When we engage in acts of creation, whether it is through comedy, art, technology, or innovative ideas, we generate positivity and inspire others around us. Creation—particularly creation through improv—fosters an environment of collaboration, cooperation, and mutual support. It ignites the spark of progress and encourages individuals to dream big, push boundaries and explore the unknown. The act of creating empowers us to meet challenges head-on, fueling personal growth and contributing to the betterment of society as a whole.

Leaving an Enduring Legacy

While destruction may provide instant gratification, it often yields temporary results and leaves behind a trail of negativity and despair. Creation, however, enables us to construct a legacy that endures across generations. Think of the remarkable achievements of human civilization, such as literature, architecture, and scientific advancements. These represent the fruits of creation, forever embedded in history and continuing to inspire and shape our world.

Encouraging Empathy and Connection

Creation encourages empathy, compassion, and respect for the world around us. When we embark upon the journey of creation, we learn to appreciate the efforts, ideas, and perspectives of others. We recognize that someone willed a thing into existence, and we can often appreciate and respect that thing more because of it. This understanding fosters a sense of connection and helps build bridges between diverse cultures, fostering unity in a fragmented world. By choosing creation, we actively contribute to the development of a society that values empathy, understanding, and inclusivity.

Fostering Personal Fulfillment

There is an innate sense of satisfaction that comes from bringing something new and meaningful into existence. Creation allows for personal expression, providing an outlet for emotions, ideas, and aspirations. Whether it is painting a masterpiece, writing a novel, or designing a groundbreaking invention, the act of creation feeds our souls, boosts self-confidence, and adds a sense of fulfillment few destructive acts can match. By choosing to create, we tap into our true potential and discover the limitless reach of our imagination.

Daring to Try

Being a creative person is a scary endeavor. It’s hard to put something you created into the world and expose it to potential criticism and hatred. But the beauty of creation is that you can never be wrong in creating. The things that you make literally didn’t exist until you created them. There isn’t a “right” and “wrong” way to create. Your creation is merely a reflection of you at that particular point in time. The only judgment to put on your creation is whether or not you are happy with it and proud of it. So put your creation out there. You are quite literally the only one who can do it.

Inspiring Change and Transformation

The world's greatest advancements have been accomplished through creation. We evolve, we learn, and we grow through creation. This article literally did not exist until I willed it into existence. I am almighty and powerful Bend a knee to my word! Also, it’s pretty cool to create. If you’re not doing it already, give it a shot.

Michael Bradt

Michael has been entertaining folks since birth, but formally as an improviser, comedian, actor, and instructor in the Chicago and northern Indiana area since the late ‘90s. He has attended classes and workshops at iO and Second City, and has trained under countless comedians in the Chicago area. He has produced, directed, and performed in thousands of comedy shows. In his youth, he won a stand-up competition organized by Dave Odd Productions by having more friends than any of the other comedians, which was the greatest win of all. Once, he heckled David Spade on the floor of a Vegas casino until Spade escorted himself out. Michael earned a B.S. in biochemistry a LONG time ago. He taught high school biology, chemistry, and physics before going back to law school and earning his J.D. (also, a LONG time ago). While he moonlights as a comedian, his day job is real estate law. After his first foray into owning an improv theater and teaching studio in the mid-2010s, Michael and his wife and scene partner Kelsey opened The Bit in 2021 with the intention of providing a welcoming, inclusive community where creative people can create. Since opening The Bit, he has taught hundreds of students and helped them along their improv journey.
